Angus Neil Matheson was born on 31 August 1878 at Waikaka in Southland, to Angus and Margaret Matheson, and was the brother of Hugh Alexander Matheson 32868. He may have been known as Neil. Before WW1 he was a dredgemaster, and was a member of the Waikaka Freemason lodge. He later lived in Ohai and Invercargill and worked as an engineer. He died on 1 May 1958 at Invercargill and is buried in the family plot at Waikaka. It seems he never married. Along with his brother, he is commemorated on the Waikaka war memorial.
