William was the brother of Neil Matheson (12/939) and of Malcolm Alexander Matheson (number not known). They were the children of Angus Matheson, who had immigrated from Scotland, and his wife Alice May Cork.
There is no personnel file online for William, which suggests he may have served in the Second World War as well. All we know is from the family history summarised under the web page for Neil and this article and photo from a Dunedin newspaper. An online family tree indicates he married Winifred Smith in 1920 and died in Auckland in 1971.
