The son of Major Dugald Matheson, superintendent of the internment camp on Somes Island, and Marion Matheson, brother of Donald (8/2795) and Donald William (59404) Matheson.
Norman was working as a teacher in Wellington when he enlisted in 1917. He was sent overseas in April 1918 as part of the 36th Reinforcements, first to Egypt and then to the Western Front in Europe. He joined the Wellington Infantry Regiment as a private, reaching the battlefield in early October 1918 just a few weeks before the end of the war. There is no record of any injury or illness. He returned to the UK in January 1919 and sailed for home the following month.
Once out of the army Norman studied medicine in New Zealand, graduating in 1924 and leaving for the UK four years later and living there for the rest of his life. He had a notable career, specialising in urology ending up as emeritus consultant surgeon at Ashford Hospital near London. He married a British doctor, Louise Johnson, and they had three children. Norman died in 1977 aged 79.
