Angus Neil Matheson (known as Neil) was born on 31 August 1878 at Waikaka in Southland, to Angus and Margaret Matheson, and was the brother of Hugh Alexander Matheson (32868). Before WW1 he was a dredge master at Waikaka.
Neil joined up in 1917 and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and left as part of the 26th Reinforcements. He was wounded on the Western Front in January 1918 and back in England for hospital treatment until September when he returned to the front. He was wounded again in October and sent back to England, and by the time he recovered the war was over.
Neil later lived in Ohai and Invercargill and worked as an engineer. He died on 1 May 1958 at Invercargill and is buried in the family plot at Waikaka. It seems he never married. Along with his brother, he is commemorated on the Waikaka war memorial.
