If you fancy a wee dram this festive season, you might look out for two whisky distilleries that were started by Mathesons.
Glenmorangie at Tain in Ross-shire was established by William Matheson, manager of another distillery who purchased Morangie farm in 1843 and converted a brewery on the property to a distillery. It was purchased by its main customer, a company in Leith, in 1916.
Dalmore distillery is not far away from Glenmorangie. It was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, and taken over by Clan McKenzie descendants in 1867.
Both businesses now have overseas owners, but they owe their origins to entrepreneurial Mathesons.
